Rainwater Harvesting systems

A while ago I wrote on rainwater harvesting and its benefits especially on conservation of water. I would like to discuss the different rain water systems one can implement on the farm. The systems include:

1. Roof catchment.
This is the most common system especially in developing countries. They can be used for household and gardening purposes. One can use galvanized iron sheets, plastics, tiles and thatched roofs.

2.Ground catchment.
This is whereby ground surfaces are utilised as catchment areas. The ground surfaces include road, pavements and courtyards. It is used to collect water from relatively larger areas.

3.Rock catchments.
They are primarily constructed in areas with suitable rock outcrops. Runoff water is channeled along stone gutters constructed along rock surfaces and into a reservoir in concrete or stone masonry dams.

4.Storage facilities(tanks).
This is whereby underground tanks with pumping facilities or ground storage helped by gravity flow. The material maybe plastic, concrete and masonry, bricks and galvanised steel.

Adaptability of rainwater harvesting technologies depends on many factors such as the resource base i.e capital, what is available in the market and pre-existing conditions such as rock-outcrops plus the amount of water needed in a farm. The higher the volume of water harvested the better.
Water is life so water conservation is essential.

Share the rainwater harvesting methods that you have used or seen on the comment box below. Thanks for passing by.

P.S. There are various new rainwater harvesting technologies available in the market which are improvements on the pre-mentioned systems. Contact your farm supplier for more information.
