Food Packaging

Food packaging is so important not only in value addition but also it ensures that food gets to the consumer in the best quality ever. It is important in
Transport.
Handling.
Weighing or counting.
Marketing that can include distribution.
Protection from contamination.
Containment and utilisation for example a bottle of drinking water.
Identification and advertising.

Different food packaging materials
The food package to be used will depend on the size , shape, colour , shelf-life and pH of the food content among other factors.The following can be used in packaging of fresh fruits and vegetables;
Plastic crates or boxes.  they are commonly used with substances that are prone to fermentation as they allow air ventilation.
Wooden boxes. However their use has brought concerns in regard to the environment. Also they can easily cause fruit injury.
Corrugated fibre board cartons. They are light, easy to handle, recyclable and printable.
Stretch wrapping .

Other forms of packaging include environment friendly packaging. This includes biodegradable materials.
Processed food products can be packaged in the following;
Tin cans. This includes lacquers  which can be acid resistant where fruits of acidic nature are packaged in or sulphur where non-acid products such as beans are put in.
Glass.
Flexible packaging material. This includes plastic film, paper and thin metal foil.

Also packaging can be specific to an independent product and also depending on the technology.This includes hermetic closures, form fill and seal packages, retort-able and reseal able pouches, stretch films and shrink films, aerosol cans, laminates and tetrapaks.
