House of Testoni design. A while ago I wrote a blog post on
business ideas on which sale of hides and skins is listed.leather is a finished product of hides and skins. The hide will undergo several processes through tanning to become leather. In the
University of Nairobi, a course on leather technology is offered. This came about due to the need of professionals in value addition of skins and hides in Kenya.
Leather made items such as jackets, boots, sofas and shoes are very expensive. However, the cost does not outdo its advantages such as:
Durability
Timelessness
Eco-friendliness
Strength
Flexibility
The leather industry is strategic to a country's economy . It provides a source of income not only for those involved in the tanning process but also for the animal breeders. Through its export a country is able to earn revenue. The leather industry helps in opening up of new regions where the animals are stocked and tanning industries are located.

The value of leather will depend on the type of skin used. Animal skins have different grains such as full-grain and top grain hides. Full grain leather is tight therefore is able to resist moisture. The different animals used for their skins are: calves, ostrich, iguana, pig(peccary) , horses and kangaroos.
